Linguistics is called the scientific approach to study language; to be more precise the human language. This claim of linguistics being scientific has brought much debate, criticism and queries into existence and also the need to prove the linguistic field as a scientific domain. The problem not only lies with the lay people's understanding with linguistics, but also with many scholars too. Thus, it becomes an impending subject matter to be discussed within and outside the domain to prove the validity or voidness of the claim.
The first ever claim to be made for linguistics as a scientific domain was made by the prominent lingusit who tried to explore linguistics in a new horizon. One of the most recent linguist who tried to prove the mentioned proposition with an academic approach and also with strong evidence is Andrew Carnie, in his book 'Syntax : A Generative Approach'. In his book [p] he has shown that the scientific method involved in any kind of scientific inquiry or research. The process involves collecting data to interpreation of the results and finally analysing the data to derive new opinion. The new opinion will continue to evolve till the process continues to analyze or interpret the new data that will be coming up. This whole explanation breaks the misconception that language is an arbitrary system, although the word 'arbitrary' would need some more explanation, because some prominent figures in linguistics stands between the word linguistics and the word 'arbitrary'. But to say it more easily, we can debunk the misconception of language being a rigid, fixed and dumb faculty. Actually if we look at the most prominent works of late twentieth century of the Great American Linguist Noam Chomsky, we would find that he has already proved the linguistic domain as much scientific as discrete mathematics, and also he has produced such challenges from linguistic data that shook fields like psychology and cognitive science. The challenges still today bring sweat up on the eyebrows of those field scientists and also the topics are well discussed in the academic community. But the most earliest scholar to declare linguistics as a science were not these academics or scholars, but the schoar who had done the bold declaration was the great Online courses are becoming popular all over the world. Specifically during the locked down situation in the Covid-19 pandemic has caused people to be bound within their homes and given the challenge to be productive as earlier schedules. This time has also brought about revolution to the older system of education. Many universities all over the world have joined thousands of learning programs on the internet to give the students the benefit of being at home but learning with the best.
The long introduction was needed as it was the first review that I am writing on my site post within my blogging outline. However let's just start with facts like I joined Coursera (although very late) on 15 June 2020. Yes, it was pretty late in comparison with many others of my university. I enrolled in a lot of courses, and started learning a lot of new staffs there which I would say was rarely possible to access without this situation. I would say that this new horizon is the opportunity for the learners to grab as soon as people. Because the MOOC's had been available for a long time all over the internet for free, although these very hardly had attracted the students or learners as they had many limitations all around clinging. But at present, the Coursera has given the opportunity to all the universities in countries around the world to access the online free education of the renowned Universities with their Instructor's Certifications, and all for free! That's really an impressive opportunity which I can say would be rare in history again. All the courses I have been looking into all these days really impressed me a lot, also the materials are high quality and the level of the education they provide doesn't leave any scope for any question. Often the peer reviewing process also gives learners a great opportunity to take the insights of other learners from around the globe. Also, the discussion forums give learners a chance even to interact with the course instructors and the highly qualified Educators. Lastly, the certification carries a heavy weight to be gained. The certification comes from the coursera by the top universities with their credibility. The University's name and logo can be found on the certificates. Not only that, the hand written signature gives the certificate the impression of its existence and a chance to show real world people's engagement in the online course. Thus, the certification of the online courses does worth a huge payment per se. The certificates generally are paid ones. But it's a good news to get access by our universities for free to these all kinds of paid courses. The courses all would be sponsored by our university funds. What could be a more good news to share! As a student of University of Dhaka, I also got the chance to join platform and got to learn a lot of new things. I am lucky to be a part of Dhaka University to engage with coursera's online free learning platform. I will be writing about online courses and more on my upcoming blogs to share the knowledge with my fellows and the community. |
